Chapter Eight

It was well before daylight when June went for her early morning run. It had become a habit after the baby was born, to rise early for energetic exercise. By the time she would be back home, someone else would be up, coffee made, and breakfast started. The morning runs were the only alone-time June would get all day. It gave her time to think and plan her day. That day, the plan was getting a hot shower, breakfast, and assisting Jimmy with Nalani’s surgery.

June slowed her pace to a trot and then a walk when the inn came into sight. Rotating her neck in circles to stretch the muscles, she heard a rustle behind her. She looked back to see Kana, the man she’d met the first night she was there. There was still something very familiar about his face.

“Miss June, I see you’re in a hurry today.”

“Yeah, well, just out for a run before going to work later.” She waited so he could walk along with her back to the house. “I might not get out for fresh air until late.”

“Yes, shaping up to be a long day,” he said.

“What exactly do you do here, Kana? I’ve never seen you in the house.”

“Oh, help the visitors. I stay outside mostly, and let Susannah do the work inside.”

“Yes, Susannah,” June said. “She doesn’t seem to like me much.”

“Not a matter of like. You’re just so terribly…”

“What?” June asked, genuinely curious.

“Foreign.”

“Me? Born and raised here in America, in Los Angeles. How can I seem foreign to her?”

“Maybe she doesn’t know that place of which you speak.” He stopped walking when they got close to the front porch steps. “Don’t pay her any attention at all and she’ll leave you alone also. That’s how she is, someone that just isn’t comfortable with where she’s at and just needs to be left alone.”

June gave him a wave before trotting up the front porch steps, planning to put his advice into action.

Jimmy and his wife Lynn were just finishing their meals when June got to the table. Daniel brought out a fresh basket of biscuits, along with oatmeal and a pitcher of coffee. Steam rose from all of it, chasing away some of the blues of being away from her usual morning routine of eating with her family and dressing her daughter.

“Good run?” Lynn asked.

June stirred cream into her coffee and oatmeal. Pulling a biscuit in half, she smelled the steam that rose. The start of the day was too nice to quibble.

“Great run. I always feel energized after a morning run. Combined with whole grains, complex carbohydrates, and some coffee, I’ll be able to work all day without feeling hungry or tired.”

“Good! Because it might take that long!” Jimmy said. He wiped his mouth and tossed down his napkin.

“Anybody listen to the news this morning?” June asked.

“The lava is still flowing this morning, aimed right at the dike,” Daniel said, returning to the table with a fruit cup for June. “The
